Great Malvern Priory

Worcester
Great Malvern Priory is set at the heart of Great Malvern and has been welcoming all for over 900 years and we look forward to welcoming you, too.

Founded as a Benedictine Priory in 1085, the glorious Priory building shows how the church grew and developed from its monastic roots to the thriving living community it is now. It was home to Prior Walcher (d. 1135), a notable astronomer and mathematician. He introduced the Arabic numerals to England that we use today and his engraved coffin lid is on display. There's also an amazing collection of mediaeval tiles, made in local kilns, including one where the maker inscribed their own name.

The Priory is home to the finest collection of English mediaeval stained glass in any parish church. The remarkable 'Magnificat' window, given in 1501 by Henry VII shows scenes from Mary's life and a unique depiction of Prince Arthur. In contrast, the Millennium Windows designed by Thomas Denny, and based on verses from Psalm 36, glimmer with colour and shade, revealing intricate, unexpected, details.

Links to the Malvern Water Cure can be found in the beautiful churchyard, where a simple gravestone marks the final resting place of Annie Darwin, daughter of Charles Darwin, who came to Malvern in search of a cure.

Guide books and gifts can be purchased at the Priory Shop. For information on services and opening hours and to get a flavour of our living church, visit our website.
