Dumfries Museum

Dumfries
Step into a treasure house of history in Dumfries and Galloway telling the story of the region and its people. The museum is one of the oldest in Scotland with something for everyone to enjoy, and admission is free.

Discover the natural history and geology of the area, from fossil footprints left by prehistoric creatures, the wildlife of the Solway, to eye-catching rocks and fluorescent minerals.

The archaeological collections are recognised as being of national significance, including tools and weapons from the Stone Age and Bronze Age, amazing artefacts from Roman forts, early Christian stone carvings, and discoveries from medieval castles and abbeys.

Explore fascinating local history including the invention of the pedal bicycle, working life in farms and factories, crimes and punishment, crafts, and domestic life from 16th to 20th century.

The museum is home to the oldest working camera obscura in the world, which can be demonstrated on dry days – small admission charge applies. The museum also operates other free attractions nearby in the town including the Old Bridge House – Dumfries’ oldest home, Robert Burns’ House – the final home of the poet, and the Robert Burns Centre – exploring the town in Burns’ time.

Dumfries Museum also hosts a lively programme of special exhibitions, events and family activities throughout the year.  There is a range of free activity trails to help explore the museum, artefacts to handle and costume to try on.  The shop sells unusual and nostalgic toys, gemstones, Scottish gifts and wide range of books.
